Workshop on advanced livestock practices
FAsCE India Zonal Office, Basar, Arunachal Pradesh, organised a three-day seminar cum workshop on Improved Livestock Husbandry Practices and Environmental Studies, under ATMA West Siang, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), ICAR centre for NEH region, at SFS School, Basar, through Jan 15-17, 2015.

Dr Doni Jini, a research scientist, along with other senior officers and scientists from ICAR, Basar, animated the sessions. On the first day, several members of Disabled People’s Organisation along with their family members and other farmers of the area took part in the seminar. Over 300 students and 10 teachers from Govt Middle School, Kargo Brighter Academy and SFS School participated in the programme on the second day.

Dr Jini, in his inaugural address, enlightened the audience regarding simple and practical methods of farming and livestock husbandry. “This is a golden opportunity made available to us, which we need to extract the maximum to be knowledgeable persons in the field of advanced agricultural practices,” said Fr Thomas Paul, MSFS, the zonal director of FAsCE India, highlighting the importance of the workshop.

Dr Doni Jini, Dr Bali Yomgam, Dr Rajesh Alore, Dr T Borah, Mr Akk Singh and Mr Ashutosh Sahi, all belonging to the staff and research team of ICAR, Basar, conducted the various sessions on topics like, strategies for high production and productivity of field crops, livestock and improved livelihood methods, common diseases of livestock and poultry, global warming and its impact on the environment, the importance of forest, the role of students in agricultural developments, daily farming, common diseases of the animals, their prevention and control, etc.

The DPO members, CBR staff and the other participants of the programme, along with the teaching staff of SFS School, were taken on a tour to the research farm of ICAR in Basar. The visit to the farm was highly informative for the participants as they were exposed to the many practical, eco friendly, low cost methodologies of farming and animal husbandry. They were also given tips on pig farming, dairy farming and vermicomposting.
